In 1904 Andries Gaastra started a small shop selling clocks and small farm machinery. After two years he added German-manufactured bicycles to his inventory. Soon, he began making and selling bicycles under his own brand – «Batavus». The company had to struggle through tough times of economic recession and wars, but their successful strategy prooved to make them one of the largest bicycle manufacturers in the world.
